Cheerleading is a Sport!!! - Owings Mills, MD

Cheerleading is a Sport!!!

A sport is defined as an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature. Cheerleading involves physical power especially in tumbling. It takes time and patience to learn to flip. Also stunting involves physical prowess because it can be difficult lifting people and have them do very cool things while in the air, you must work out and exercise a lot to be able to lift people. Jumping is more of a skill, because the way your jumps get better is by stretching. Also we compete in cheerleading which is my favorite part.

Cheerleading is a SPORT! - Baltimore, MD

Cheerleading is a SPORT

I believe that Cheerleading is a Sport, because a sport is classified as a competitive, entertaining, organized and physical activity, which exactly describes what we do as Cheerleaders. In Cheerleading we compete against other teams using organized routines which contain tumbling, dance, jumps, cheers, and stunts. During competition we are judged and scored, just as in a football, soccer, and basketball there is a referee (judge) and points are given (scored) to determine a winner, just as there a winner and competing in cheerleading. With all of lifting, stunting, warm ups, tumbling, etc. we are just as much an athlete as anyone else. We wear our uniforms proudly, we yell out loudly, we jump high, and we roll low, if you didn't think Cheerleading was a Sport now you know!

Cheerleading IS A Sport! - Clarksville, MD

Ask me what my sport is?

Most people would say cheerleading isn’t a sport, for they think we scream chants at football games, and shake pom- poms. As a true competitive cheerleader I know it is much more than that. We flip and twist our bodies, lift and throw people through the air, and work harder than most athletes do while keeping a smile on our faces. We have to bond and learn to work with every person on our team. Next time you see someone with makeup dripping down their face from all the sweat they perspired, you’ll know they are a true athlete.

The Story Behind the GK Cheerleading Uniform

How Revolution Began

Since entering the all-star cheerleading market a little over a year ago, we, at GK, are frequently asked, “How did you decide to get into cheerleading?”  While we’d love to say Maryland Twisterswe had some special foresight, it was really a right place, right time situation.

We had been supplying warm-ups to the Maryland Twisters Cheerleading for a few years prior.  The Twisters (who have a reputation for being innovative) were looking for something different to wear.  They were familiar with our position as the market leader in outfitting gymnasts worldwide and wanted something similar to what our Olympic athletes wore.  So we set about engineering a cheerleading uniform that would fit great, be comfortable to wear, and look amazing under the lights.  The result was the original F5 uniform.

We received such overwhelmingly positive feedback on this one uniform that we decided we better take a closer look at this all-star cheer industry.  What we found amazed us!

On the one hand, the progression of all-star cheerleading routines over the years was phenomenal, with stunting and tumbling skills being much more complex and requiring a lot more athleticism.  It was immediately apparent to us that cheerleading is a sport……and cheerleaders are real athletes!

On the other hand, when we started researching the cheerleading apparel side of things, were less than impressed with how little the cheerleading uniforms had kept up with the advancement of the sport.  They still resembled the sideline variety your mom wore when she was a varsity cheerleader for the football team.  They were predominantly made of heavy 100% double-knit polyester, were covered with restrictive, non-stretch binding, and even had zippers!

So here’s what we did.  We took our 30 years of experience outfitting Olympic athletes and created the next generation cheer uniform:

·         We used four-way super-stretch fabrics developed exclusively for GK and our proprietary pattern technology to engineer a garment designed for maximum performance, fit and comfort.

·         We eliminated zippers, binding, buttons, or anything else that would restrict movement while practicing or competing.

·         Finally, we designed a cutting edge look that would set our teams apart from the others on the competition floor.  Our styling included an athletic cut, a wide range of performance fabrics in eye-catching colors, funky backs, crop tops and design lines, and lots of bling!

And that is how the revolution began.

Reign Marymand TwistersThe Maryland Twisters Reign team Performed this weekend at the Jamfest Nationals (Indianapolis, IN January 15-17) in their NEW GK Cheer Unis!

Reign, the Maryland Twisters Small Limited Coed Level 5 Team, is the Most Winning All Start Team in the Country, and won the Nfinity Cup in 2009

They chose Jamfest Nationals to debut this new uniform - which is actually their second. The team carries two competition cheer uniforms for different events. They were on tap to replace their "traditional" uniform, to compliment the GK unis that they purchased last year. And after looking at their options, had to go back to GK. Its all about the fit and the look!

In fact, the team members did extra fundraising just to get them. Otherwise they would have to wait, or settle for less than what they wanted.

The Reign Uniforms include a Cheer Crop Top Uni with matching Cheer Shorts. For Guys, matching Long Tops and Pants. All Unis are jeweled by GK to shine under the lights.

As seen in Inside Cheerleading:

5 Reasons why we love Taylor Hall, today's Cheerleader

Earning a spot on the world famous Maryland Twister's F5 large  senior team in only the 6th grade, with four NCA national championships and one Cheer Worlds gold medal on her resume, it is clear why Taylor Hall is this month's Today's Cheerleader.

(1) FACING FEARS - Despite a fear of heights, Taylor is ironically one of the best top girls in the country.

(2) SMILE FACTOR - Taylor's smile can light up a room. It also helped her become the face of GK's 2009 cheer line, fronting their catalog cover.

(3) CARRYING A FULL LOAD - On top of cheerleading on a competitive level 5 team and going to school five days a week, Taylor takes extra courses after school to earn more credits towards graduation.

(4) FAMILY TIES - Talk about a Love/Hate relationship, Taylor's older sister , True, is also her coach at Twisters. ("There is no favoritism at practice. We fight at home, but I respect her as my coach at the gym," she says.)

(5) TO BE OR NOT TO BE - Taylor plans on using the talents and skills she has obtained throughout her 12 year cheerleading career to pursue acting school upon graduation.

Introducing cheer.gkelite.com

Friday, July 31, 2009 by Michelle Weaver
GK Cheer Blog
Friday July 31st - Reading, PA - GK Elite Sportswear announces that we have a new blog specially devoted to our Cheerleading Uniforms.

http://cheer.gkelite.com

Introduced early in 2009, GK's New Cheer Uniforms and Cheer Team Coordinates have proved to be a natural extension to our product offering. Cheerleading apparel is a match to our capabilities with Gymnastics Leotards and Apparel, where reliable stretch and consistent fit are a must. GK Cheer separates include Cheer Crop Tops and Long Tops with matching Shorts and Skirts. Instead of Heavy Double Knit Polyester and Braid, GK uses the same Nylon Spandex used in Gymnastics Leotards. It figures that if these fabrics are ideal of Gymnastics Tumbling, they will also be comfortable for tumbling in Cheerleading.

The New GK Cheer Unis really debuted to the Cheer marketplace this April at the All Star Cheerleading Worlds event in Orlando, Florida. At the Event, The California All Starts and the Maryland F5 Twisters, two of the leading All Star Cheer Clubs in the US, introduced GK Unis to the Cheer World. And Cheerleaders are not looking back.

So Check out our New Cheer Blog - and bookmark it for future reference. If you are not already signed up, be sure to join our Cheer mailing List, where we will be sure to keep you informed of everything new in Cheerleading Apparel.
